The Impact of Visual Effects on Player Experience in a Novel FPS Game
This Bachelor thesis investigates the influence of visual effects – including camera shake, hit feedback, and lighting – on player experience in a newly developed first-person shooter game, Fallen World.
The project involved creating two distinct game levels: one without any visual effects (Standard) and another with enhanced visual embellishments (Embellished). Players experienced both levels and provided feedback via the Player Experience Inventory (PXI) and exit questionnaires. The study found that while most aspects of player experience remained consistent, the challenge component was significantly heightened in the embellished version.
By leveraging Unreal Engine’s advanced capabilities, the project not only demonstrates practical game development skills but also contributes valuable insights into how carefully integrated visual effects can enrich gameplay by increasing immersion and perceived difficulty.
The addition of dynamic visual effects transformed the gameplay experience, making it more challenging and immersive.
